The book is divided into six sections - Numbers, Relationships, Shapes, Change, Data and “Frontiers. My only regret is that I couldn't read it in high school, when I was *actually* struggling with math. The word "calculate" reflects that legacy -- it comes from the Latin word calculus, meaning a pebble used for counting. Steven Strogatz is a professor of applied mathematics and his wittily titled The Joy Of X is an attempt to demystify the subject. I was excited to be learning about math as an adult - to create a new relationship with it.This book started out so strong, and drew me in. And despite all the quotes about how math was beautiful in my textbooks, I still just don't get it. It attempts to help us get comfortable with formulas, quadratic equations, calculus and even the advanced math that engaged Albert Einstein in his life. When you're having sex do you find that the earth may not move, but images of numbers and mathematical symbols appear in your head when things are going great? If you're interested in some different ways to look at math functions, this book is worth the read. This book, written in a plain and enjoyable form, with humoristic touchs ,is aimed to people with little background in mathematics , but that have some interest in its concepts and play roled in everyday life. This book, written in a plain and enjoyable form, with humoristic touchs ,is aimed to people with little background in mathematics , but that have some interest in its concepts and play roled in everyday life. Some amount of Maths is part of everyone’s life, whether literate, illiterate and/or poor. In this book, the author strives to communicate what mathematics is about to a set of people who might be otherwise intimidated by the very name of 'math'. To enjoy working with numbers you don't have to be Einstein (German for "one stone"), but it might help to have rocks in your head.”“let’s begin with the word “vector.” It comes from the Latin root vehere, “to carry,” which also gives us words like “vehicle” and “conveyor belt.” To an epidemiologist, a vector is the carrier of a pathogen, like the mosquito that conveys malaria to your bloodstream. However, beyond it, maths raises anxiety in many of us. It’s a great book for the curious mind. The Joy of X: A Guided Tour of Math, from One to Infinity by Steven StrogatzThe Joy of X: A Guided Tour of Math, from One to Infinity by Steven StrogatzI definitely comprehended less as the book went on, but that did little to detract from my awe and enjoyment. Biology was my passion, but I avoided the field because of the math courses required for a bachelor of science degree.A wonderful book of short essays displaying the elegance of math in a grand and easily digestible format. Took me twenty-eight years to make it 30 minutes into a book that explained it to me.. but.. We’d love your help. I was able to grasp concepts that eluded me all through graduate school with ease.If you feel that Mathematics is not for you, please read this book.
Some interesting takes on maths that had me smiling, and actually laughing out loud in a couple of places.A readable romp from 3 plus 3 to infinity, and beyond! It wasn't until years later that I began to value the beauty and elegance of mathematics. A renowned teacher and one of the world’s most highly cited mathematicians, he has been a frequent guest on National Public Radio’s Radiolab.
This was not as fantastic as Infinite Powers, which ended up becoming a favorite book of all time for me, but it made me wish I could go back in time and make all the connections outlined in this book before learning the math taught to me from middle school through college. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are part of our arsenal. I wanted a greater appreciation of math's beauty, instead I god a folksy re-hash over concepts I was generally aware of, and competent and applying (the exceptions being topology, group theory, the hilbert hotel, and a few other odds and ends).Considering how horrible I am at Calculus, it's surprising how much I enjoyed this book :|Considering how horrible I am at Calculus, it's surprising how much I enjoyed this book :|If I could give half stars, this would get 3.5 stars. I KNOW!! Strogatz’s writing style and use of visuals and anecdotes makes the book very interesting. The Joy of X: a Guided Tour of Mathematics, from One to Infinity by Steven Strogatz: review For a brief but beautiful moment, Andrew Pettie understands calculus, reviewing The Joy of X … Some interesting takes on maths that had me smiling, and actually laughing out loud in a couple of places.I didn't enjoy this book at all - the maths was very basic, but the author managed to make even this quite confusing in parts.
Each chapter is very short and about a particular topic of mathematics. Back then all text books were turgid and we learned subjects to pass exams. Some of the maths symbols didn't even display at all - all pretty much essential for a maths book.
The Joy of X is math made quick and fun, replete with dad jokes, groaners that make an appearance at the close of each chapter.
Strogatz brings a fresh way of exploring maths topics and explaining their purpose - I would have found it much easier and more rewarding if this approach had been around in the mid 60s I also think it makes a GREAT resource for math teachers. Some of the maths symbols didn't even display at all - all pretty much essential for a maths book. Let us know what’s wrong with this preview of I think the book succeeds in some areas while falling flat in others.
