I am writing this review after finishing the book five months ago. A great Victorian tale, about a horse, Tiberius, a race, the Derby, and a wide cast of colourful characters from all sections of society. We do this in our legitimate interest. Great weekend read. No more plot secrets, read the book, it's worth it.

I read it in two days and keep thinking about it. He is a novelist, critic and acclaimed biographer, whose Orwell: The Life won the Whitbread Biography prize in 2003.

Loved it up to the epilog, wherein I thought the author should have been more imaginative regarding the fate of the major players. The voice of the narrator sticks in your head as only the best can do. The evocation of Victorian England is beautifully observed and brought to life without any feeling that the author is lecturing to you.
In his latest novel, The plot is convoluted but I found the characters sufficiently interesting to follow it through and of course the most interesting characters were the nasty ones - I began to feel a particular affection for the dastardly Captain Raff.
