For loads around 45 lbs, this pack performed equally to our Editors' Choice award winner, the Arc'teryx Bora and was on par with the performance of the REI Flash 65.
It doesn’t have that many features, but it is extremely good at being lightweight and useful. (You can read my review of the Kelty Redwing 50 here.)
In this context, in order for the pack to be lightweight, luxuries such as more padded straps and more pockets are sacrificed. I’ve been using the Flash 18 as a secondary backpack along with my Kelty Redwing 50. REI’s newest line of packs, however, is different. There is a small learning curve to this system. And the top pocket is waterproof, making it great for electronics and other valuables.Meanwhile, the curved hip belt proved a nice touch, keeping the pack’s weight snug to my waist. Adjustment straps for both the lumbar section of the back and the shoulder straps are easy and intuitive, which helps with any pressure points that come up.The roll-top design is a great way to adjust the volume that the pack carries, although I do wish it was fully waterproof, not just the top pocket. The more secure zippered pockets are small, but work well for organizing small gear like headlamps or water filters. It is not a pack issue so much as a general fitness and … Modularity meets lightweight design with the REI Flash 55 Pack. The light weight is mainly due to it being frameless and not really padded. The main reason I bought the Flash 18 was because of its price, weight and size. The mesh stretch pockets are easy to get into and hold things well.
I was comfortable hiking all day with 25 lbs (11.34 kg) in the pack. I chose the black color, because I didn’t really want to stick out while traveling. The floating lid has an external zippered pocket with a key fob and is generously sized to store maps, hats or gloves. 30 lbs (13.61 kg) is the maximum weight that REI recommends for the Flash 55.
