Laminating the top especially with the rounded corners on 2x4s takes a lot of work. I've also watched another YouTuber by the name of Wranglerstar build the same style bench, so I have a pretty good idea of what I'm getting in to. Thanks for the info! How tall are you? Would you think the Nicholson a bad choice for that? Discussion in 'Axe, Tomahawk, & Hatchet Forum' started by monkapotamus, Jan 18, 2015. I maintain that most of the workbenches intended for joinery aren't good beginner projects due to their size and complexity. While my workbench came together and is effective, I made a lot of mistakes along the way that I could have avoided by developing the core skills ahead of time. If you watch a lot of Paul Sellers videos, you'll notice he doesn't really joint and thickness boards a lot. I still struggle with some of this, but I'm getting better through constant, careful practice.
When I started, I didn't know how to sharpen my tools properly. A couple super easy ones seen Full disclosure, I haven't build Seller's bench. I made a Paul Sellers Style Workbench over Winter Break. Like Paul Sellers, I also want to show that you can make the finest joinery with the humblest tools. I couldn't flatten and true stock with a plane. I then need to chisel out the channels on the sides of the aprons, cut and fit the wedges, then put it all together and attach the vise.Anyway, I hope that block of text helps in your decision. It's pretty well known that I am not a fan of this bench. I chose to use the 2x6 over the 2x4 because I wanted the thicker bench top. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts However that is not to say it is without merit.
It will serve you well.Note: That thick a top will give you some extra work when it comes to holdfasts and vises. Hello all, I'm new to traditional woodworking, and I'm getting ready to build a work bench after the style PS shows in his video series. See attached pic. Anyway, having the thicker top allows me later on, to plane away about a quarter inch and have basically a fresh bench top again! I skipped the haunched tenon aspect and just went with through mortises for all 8.Since the top slab is in two halves, getting them to be equal thickness so the top is flat by hand was problematic for me (mostly 'cause I still have a ton to learn about proper handplane technique). 193. Before you commit to building it, I would suggest looking at some other bench designs.I won't get into my whole tirade, but there are 3 areas where this bench is VERY deficient IMO:1 - Planing/stock prep.
Well doneIts honestly an amazing project so I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun! I have the legs and aprons finished and attached on mine and I start on my top this week when my new plane arrives. I added holes for holdfasts and dogs on the top which I highly recommend. It took me overall two weeks mostly on weekends to finish it. I ended up using my jointer and planer.
I do like the weight the laminated top gives the bench, it stops it moving around for me. You'll want something with either end, tail or wagon vises, and you'll want the ability to clamp stuff to the top. I spend more time futzing with work holding than doing actual work and it's really frustrating.Add to that the limited clamping provided by the tool bay down the center. This makes up part of the optional decoration for the bottom of the clock. Prepping the boards for lamination probably took a weekend. What made you go with 2x6 instead of 2x4 lumber, if I may ask? And yeah, I went with BLO but if I did this whole thing again, I might try Danish oil.
