It took some finesse to get through those corners without going down. It is documented that Chief Joseph would water his horse and buy supplies in the town of Blewett.

This change took place in 1956, and Highway 97 was properly known as the Swauk Pass highway for approximately 40 years until some stupid buttknockers insisted on being stupid and changing the name to Blewett Pass.
And so, technically speaking, the highway no longer crossed Blewett Pass. Automobile on Blewett Pass.

I did not even know there was such a name as "Swauk Pass" until I was out of high school in the early 1990s and an attempt was made to revert the signage to the technically correct geographic name. Notice the changes in the roadway and guard rails in the following 3 photos. The pass was 30 feet higher, 4071 ft. vs. 4102 ft., but the grade was much less. In 1923, the name was changed to Primary State Hwy #2. After a summer full of riding and with a mojo still glowing from the joy of my new I rode alone, and I saw no one– car, bike, or otherwise. The guy that ran the little campground there told me a story about a cavalry officer that was from Ellensburg.

The road went from Lake Washington thru Renton and North Bend, over Snoqualmie Pass (on the old switchback road between Denny Creek and the summit), thru Cle Elum and over Blewett to Wenatchee. This mining town had a reputation as one of the most disorderly and violent mining camps in Chelan County. The mining boom town was established as a camp in the 1870's with activity dating to the 1860's. At 7 miles from the junction of Highways 97 and 970, pass the Mineral Springs Resort.

In summer, visitors can drive to the pass on the Old Blewett Pass Highway, where you can see the site of an old restaurant and a 1930s rope-tow ski lift. Beter get there soon … Beautiful post Jim, we’re pretty lucky in Adelaide with something similar as one of the main climbs just outside the city.When there was a re-development of the main Adelaide-Melbourne Freeway that goes out through the hills they kept the old road & set up a purpose built bike path that goes along both the new & old roads all the way up to the highest peak overlooking the city…voila, instant 12k climb, which happens to start basically right outside my front door.Aesome, Jim!

It is, quite possibly, the best climb I have ever ridden.I climbed from the North side, after an approach of about 25km on US97.

Blewett Pass on US 97. The area between Cle Elum and Leavenworth is very historical. Echo Point is located not too far from the summit on the south side. Quiet, gorgeous.
