After the police accuse him of murdering his neighbor, Tom tries to use his weekly visits to Margit's apartment as an alibi. Pawlikowski's camera follows Tom obtrusively, with an intent and focused gaze. When Hicks discovers his lover doesn't live at the apartment where he has been meeting her, and realizes that the apartment has been long empty, he must struggle to keep his sanity and find the answer to the riddle. While this story itself was less engaging than some of Kennedy's other books, it was the woman he created here, as in his other novels, that makes this worth reading. In the final scene, Ania waits for him at the bar but Tom ascends the stairs once again to Margit's apartment. Everything he writes flows so incredibly perfectly and his intelligence is off the scale.
Douglas Kennedy keeps the suspense going till the end Although Harry is a bit of a weak and wimpy character and could do with a good shake at times Margit (the woman in the fifth) is one tough cookie and a force (?) I can only imagine that this book was published because Douglas Kennedy had a book deal with his publishers to write a certain amount of books! I enjoyed the book!Kennedy's plot and voice as imminent as as in all of his superb novels.
