Hired as a police recruit in 1991, Chief Renaud spent many years working uniformed patrol assignments and special investigations positions. Along with patrol and investigative functions, the Santa Monica Police Department maintains a SWAT team, a Motor unit, a Mounted unit, K-9 officers, Homeless Liaison Program, Bicycle Patrol, School Resource Officers, Animal Control Unit, City Jail, Community Affairs Unit, Records Administration, Front Desk services, Forensics Lab, and a Pier & Harbor Services team who provide service on the Pier and water rescue support.

In 2013, Chief Renaud was appointed by then-Attorney General Kamala Harris to the CLETS Advisory Committee.
