The name is derived from the peculiar form of the snout, which is like a long tube, ending in a narrow and small mouth which opens upwards and is toothless. The Australian Museum is closed to the public until Spring 2020 to enable a major renovation.
Most measure under 15 centimetres long, with ghost pipefish ranging between 7-15 cm. The basic characteristics of all pipefish are much the same: their bodies are long and thin, they have a snout ending in a narrow mouth, a dorsal fin but no ventral fins.
Pipefish look like straight-bodied seahorses with tiny mouths. The body and tail are long, thin, and snake -like. The information concerning their growth and larvadevelopment process is limited. Ghost pipefish, (genus Solenostomus ), any of a group of small, rare marine fishes characterized by long snouts and enlarged fins that belong to the family Solenostomidae (order Gasterosteiformes ). Pipefish belong to the same family as seahorses (Syngathidae), and while they aren’t one of the 47 types of seahorse, they share many of the same similarities.
It has deeply incised membranes in the dorsal, caudal and ventral fins.Its colour varies from almost totally black to semi-transparent with red, yellow, and white scribbling, spots and blotches.The species is found in protected coastal waters, especially near coral and rocky dropoffs. They do belong to the same family though.
Ghostpipefishes are different to seahorses in several ways.
They can be purchased for around $18 (depending on its size) and can grow up to 8″ long.
